It’s not all fun and games, sometimes it is just hard work. Thinking of what to make next, what to write about, what to draw, what song to use in the dance, it is not always fun. There is hard work involved when you are creative. What do you do when you get stuck? What do you do when you can’t think of the next thing?
When I worked in clay and I had just finished up a big project I was often at a loss on what to start next. Usually I had to many ideas and not enough time, but often, there were no ideas. That is when the studio got cleaned, and cleaned well! Sometimes I washed down every corner, organized all the tools, dusted even the top shelves. That usually took care of the problem. By the time I had spent a day cleaning and organizing I was ready to go, but not always. Sometimes I would just need to get out for a day or two. In summer, I would get out and play in the water and in winter, I would go skiing for a day, read a good book, or watch a movie. The problem was, getting back to work. It is a fine line between taking a break to clear your head and walking away for a few days, weeks, or even months. If you are the type to get sidetracked and have a hard time getting back to work I have a suggestion.
Just work! Yes, it is as simple as that. When you are actually working the idea come. If you are sitting around waiting for inspiration it may never happen. Get in there, put some good music on, get your hands dirty and get back to work.
I work with glass beads and wire these days instead of clay and it isn’t quit the same, but the work ethic is the same. Work hard and the ideas will come. Sometimes now instead of cleaning my studio (I don’t have one anymore), I might sort beads, or clean off the table. I might just catch up on laundry, clean the house, organize a cupboard that has been bugging me first, but then I get back to work. Work might be just pull out some new bead colors, looking up color trends, retaking photos, or working on this website, but the main thing is, DO SOMETHING!
So what are you waiting for? Inspiration? It will come, just go get some work done!
